Coach Pyne is in his first year as the Head Coach of Union High School. Prior to Union, he was the Head Coach at Central Catholic from 2003-2023, he compiled a 195-54 (.784) record in his 21 seasons at Central Catholic. During his tenure, the Rams were 130-13 (.909) in the Mt. Hood Conference. The Rams won conference championships in 2006,08,09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22 & 23. The Rams advanced to the state quarter-finals in 04, 07, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22 & 23, the state semi-finals in 2011, 13, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, and have appeared in the State Championship game in 2013, 14, 16, 19, 21 & 2023. The Rams won the 6A State Championship in 2013, 2014, 2019, 2021 & 2023. 


In his time at Central Catholic, Coach Pyne was fortunate enough to have coached eleven All-Americans: Kevin Frahm ’07 (Offense / Defense Game), Myles Wade 07’ (U.S. Army Game), Brennan Scarlett ’11 (U.S. Army Game), Alex Balducci ’12 (U.S. Army Game), Connor Humphreys ’14 (U.S. Army Game), Blake Brandel ’15 (Semper Fi Game) and TJ Salu ’15 (Polynesian All-American Game), Brady Breeze ’16 (USA Football International Bowl), La’Mar Winston ’16 (USA Football International Bowl), Malakai Salu (Polynesian All-American Game), Riley Williams “23 (UnderArmour All-American Bowl).  


Coach Pyne was an assistant coach in the 2014 Army All-American game and an assistant coach in the 2016 USA Football International Bowl. He has been the Mt. Hood Conference Coach of the Year 7 times, Oregonian State Coach of the Year three times, and OACA Coach of the Year five times.


2024 will mark Coach Pyne’s 37th year in high school coaching in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Prior to coming to Central Catholic, he coached four seasons at Wilson High School compiling a 21-17 (.552) record and winning a P.I.L. championship in 2002. His career record is 216-71 (.753). He and his wife Erica have two adult children Zach and Allison.

Coach Wood s going into his fifth season on the Union High School Football staff. While on staff at Union, Coach Wood has held a variety of roles, including Freshman Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator the last two seasons. In his first year on staff, Coach Wood held a non-coaching role filming practices and games at the Varsity level.


Prior to his time at Union, Coach Wood spent one season as the Defensive Line coach at Cascade Middle School. Coach Wood has also coached 7-on-7 and tackle football at the youth level in the Vancouver area, prior to his time coaching in the middle school and high school ranks. In total, Coach Wood has 13 years of football coaching experience.

Coach Gaffney joins the Union HS football community in 2024. Gaffney began his coaching career in 2007 at North Eugene High School as the JV Co-Head Football Coach while completing his senior year at the University of Oregon. After graduation, he had a 1-year stint at Ida B. Wells High School before joining Central Catholic High School from 2010-2016, and again from 2020-2023 coaching football, lacrosse, and basketball over that time. Gaffney is a graduate of Lake Oswego High School where he was all-league, all-state, a team captain, and helped lead the Lakers to their first State Championship appearance in football. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a Masters Degree from Warner Pacific College. Gaffney is the co-owner & CEO of the Sports Leadership Institute, a professional development company working with pro, college, and youth sports leaders from around the world. He is also an investor & LP owner in multiple professional sports leagues and franchises and a Board Member/Advisor to several organizations focused on sports, technology, education, and military support. Gaffney resides in East Vancouver with his wife Shannon and young twins; Brooke and Logan.

Coach Domek will be entering his 3rd year at Union High School. He has been coaching on the defensive side of the ball, primarily with DBs. He has also previously coached for 2 years at his alma mater, Issaquah High School.

He attended Pacific Lutheran University where he played safety for 4 years before going on to grad school at Eastern Washington University. Since finishing his education he has been a practicing physical therapist here in town, working at The Vancouver Clinic. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA.

Coach Ames is in his first year coaching at Union High School.  Prior to coming to Union, he has dedicated his time to raising his five children (along with his wife Kara), just getting his youngest through college in August of ’24.  He currently works as an Executive Director for Genentech in Portland, overseeing the Access Center Operations (made up of around 350 employees).  He has held a variety of positions at various companies in the pharmaceutical industry during his 33-year career.


He is a graduate of the University of Washington, where he played football from 1985-89.  He was a two-year starter at tight end and Pac-10 Honorable Mention in 1989.  He lettered all four years at UW, earning his early playing time as a long snapper for both the punt and field goal teams.  He also had a very brief career with the Indianapolis Colts in 1990 before knee injuries forced him to end his playing career.


As a way of staying involved with football while his kids were growing up, Coach Ames had short stints coaching at Eastlake High School in Redmond, WA, and University High School in Spokane, WA (his alma mater).  He has also worked various football camps in the Eastern Washington area, specifically with long snappers. For the past 15 years has served as a color analyst for a local television station in Spokane that broadcasts games for Eastern Washington University and the University of Idaho.


Coach Ames is very excited to be a part of the Union High School program where he can help contribute to success both on and off the field.

Coach Jones graduated from Central Catholic HS in 1989 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. He played Varsity Football as a freshman while earning JV and Freshman MVP honors. As a sophomore, he started every Ram game and was honorable-mention All-Mount Hood Conference while helping lead the Rams to the playoffs. He garnered First Team All-Mount Hood Conference and Third Team All-

State as a junior. That year, the Rams were Mount Hood Conference Champs and made it to the second round of the State playoffs. During his senior year, Matt was All-Mount Hood Conference, Player of the Year in the Mount Hood Conference, All-State by the Oregonian and Eugene Register-Guard, State Player of the Year, and All-American. He played in the North-South Shrine game and received a full-ride

football scholarship to the University of Washington. Matt played as a freshman at the University of Washington in 1990 and went to his first Rose Bowl, where Washington defeated Iowa. As a sophomore in 1991, Matt started every game, earned All-Pac-

Ten Honorable-Mention, and went to his second straight Rose Bowl, where Washington defeated Michigan and won the National Championship. 1992, during his junior campaign, he started eight games and went to another Rose Bowl. As a senior in 1993, Matt started ten games, earned All-Pac-Ten Honorable-Mention, and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine game. 


After college, Matt played professionally in the USA and Europe. Matt Jones started his coaching career in 1994, briefly coaching for Cascade High School in Everett, Washington, for legendary coach Terry Ennis before returning to professional football. In 1996, Matt was the defensive coordinator for Coach Ron Milus of Lincoln HS in Tacoma, Washington. After a hiatus in coaching, Matt started coaching again in Oslo, Norway, as defensive coordinator of Nordstrand Bandits in 2003 for Head Coach Lars Lundgren. He became Head Coach of the Christiania Rebels U-16 and OSI Viking teams in 2004. Matt returned to the States in 2005 and was the special team coach for Ingraham HS for head Coach Tony Dominguez.


He returned to Central Catholic High School (CCHS) and coached the WRs from 2007 to 2012. After taking a quick break from coaching, Matt returned to CCHS in 2014 to coach the RB and became the defensive coordinator from 2019 to 2023.

Coach Baur is in his second year of coaching football at Union High School. Coach Baur spent last year coaching the defensive line for the Freshman team, where his hands-on approach helped the defense exceed expectations in 2023.  Coach Baur stresses the importance of mental attitude, not just physicality with his defensive linemen.  Academics are also critically important to Coach Baur's football coaching philosophy to ensure our student-athletes reach their maximum potential.  


Before Coach Baur started coaching football at Union, he has been a fixture in the Union Wrestling program, as an assistant coach for the last seven years.  In his time coaching wrestling at Union, he has had the pleasure of working with some exceptional wrestling coaches who helped wrestlers become the best athletes they can be.

Coach Kramer is entering his 18th fall coaching high school football, his first at Union. He has also coached at Gresham ‘07-‘10, David Douglas ‘10-‘23, and Central Catholic ‘23-‘24. In that time he has coached various levels and positions. He also coaches baseball. He received his Masters in Business Education from Eastern Oregon University and teaches high school business. He has been married to his wife Erin for 11 years, they have a Boston Terrier named Slider.

Coach Cooper will be in his 1st season with the Union Titans. Before coaching at Union, Coach Coop coached at Central Catholic High School for 2 years and was the JV Head Coach, at Clackamas High School for 9 years and Mt View High School in Bend, OR for 5 years. He and his wife, Annie have been married for 33 years. They have three children, Reagan, 30. Masey is 25 and Cameron is 22.

Coach Payne, a Camas local. Grew up playing football for Camas High School and later furthered both his education and football career at Eastern Oregon University. From the years of 2012 to 2016, John dominated on the field, leading his team to their, first ever, playoff appearance in school history. After graduating in 2017, John began both his teaching and coaching career in the greater PNW area. Now, in his fourth year at Union, he's found his groove as both a teacher and coach. John finds both joy and fulfillment in coaching and mentoring the next generation of stars on and off the field.

Coach Barker started his coaching career at Mountain View High School in 2014 where he coached there for 10 years primarily with the Defensive Backs. The 2023 season was his first as a Union football coach. He is currently a Math teacher at Union. He is married to a fellow teacher and Union cheer coach Mckenzie. Together they have one daughter named Daisy who you might see running around during games on Friday nights. When not coaching football Jered enjoys spending time with his family, playing video games, and collecting shoes.

Coach Green brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the football program at Union High School. With a career spanning over five seasons at Union, Coach Green has left an indelible mark on the team and the community. His versatile coaching expertise has seen him mold young athletes across various positions, from running backs to linebackers and quarterbacks, showcasing his comprehensive understanding of the game.


Not only has Coach Green excelled in coaching individual positions, but he has also showcased his strategic prowess as an offensive coordinator for the freshman team and as the assistant offensive coordinator for the varsity squad. His contributions have been instrumental in securing two Greater St. Helens League (GSHL) titles, underlining his commitment to excellence and success on the field.


Coach Green's impact extends beyond the high school realm, as he dedicates his time to nurturing talent at the middle school level. Serving as the defensive coordinator at Pacific Middle School, he has established a formidable defensive unit, boasting an impressive average of 13 points per game allowed. His leadership has been pivotal in guiding the team to a memorable Middle School Greater St. Helens League (MSGSHL) championship in 2023.


A product of Union High School himself, Coach Green's journey in football didn't end with his graduation. He continued his pursuit of excellence on the gridiron at the collegiate level, earning a spot on the Division I football team at the University of Montana. His experiences as a player undoubtedly enrich his coaching style, offering invaluable insights and mentorship to aspiring athletes.

Coach Pyne started his coaching career in 1982 as a middle school football coach. Craig joined the Central Catholic staff in 2005 as the freshman defensive coordinator. Craig left Central Catholic in 2007 to coach his children’s various sports, returning in 2015 as the JV offensive line coach. Since 2015 he has coached wide receivers, linebackers, defensive backs, and running backs and has been the JV2 offensive coordinator since 2021. Craig lives in Sandy and is married to Dawnette. They have three adult children.

Coach Rowe is entering his third year as an assistant coach for Union High School. Prior to joining Union, coaching the defensive line on all three levels (freshman, JV, and Varsity). In addition, he also coached multiple aspects of special teams during this timeframe. Coach Rowe has been involved with and coaching for the Union High School community and the Union Football program in various capacities for the past decade. His son played for Union, and Coach Rowe had the privilege of coaching alongside him in 2021 before he left for military service. Prior to Union, Coach Rowe served as an assistant offensive line and special teams coach at Prairie High School.

Coach Wochnick is in his first year as the varsity Offensive Line Coach at Union High School. Prior to Union, he was the O-Line coach at Camas High School from 2007-2023, and this includes 15 league championships and two 4A Washington State Championships in 2016 and 2019. Wochnick also had stops at Heritage, Mt. View, and Hudson Bay. At Mt. View and there he was a huge part of two semifinal teams, a first at the time in the GSHL. He was the 2019 John Hadley Recipient for Best Assistant Coach award presented by the Local chapter of the National Football Foundation and coached some great athletes who went on to play college football. Coach Wochnick grew up in the area where he was an All-State offensive lineman at Evergreen High School and went on to be a starter and full scholarship athlete at Eastern Washington University. 2024 will mark Coach Wochnick’s 26th year coaching High School football. He and his wife Stefanie of 21 years have a son Trevor, who works for UPS and at Camas was a two-time all-league, all-region, and all-state center graduating in 2015. A daughter Taryn is attending St. Martin's College in Olympia this fall and also graduated from Camas and had an excellent track and field career and will continue throwing hammer and shot put on an athletic scholarship, and two dogs named Luna and Diesel. Coach Wochnick’s Expectations: Create the best O-line core possible. Win at all costs. Treat each minute with these kids as if it is the last minute with them, I will have. His philosophy: The execution of the offensive linemen and the soundness of their scheme are the most important parts of any offensive play.

Darren graduated from David Douglas High School in 2003 and was a multi-sport

letterman and team captain in both football and wrestling. After attaining the rank of

Eagle Scout and playing in Oregon’s All-Star football game, Darren continued his

football career as an offensive lineman at Portland State University. As a four-year

letterman for the Vikings, he received both a Bachelor’s of Science in Real Estate

Finance as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. Upon finishing both

degrees in 2007, Darren joined the football coaching staff at David Douglas as the

Varsity Offensive Line Coach where he coached for 9 years prior to joining the Central

Catholic coaching staff in 2015. Over the years, Darren has coached at the Varsity and

JV level in different roles, most recently serving as the Varsity Defensive line Coach.

Along with coaching, Darren also works as a Construction Manager and owns

businesses in Oregon City and Vancouver. Darren is passionate about helping and

developing young men both on and off the field. Darren feels blessed by the support of

his friends, former teammates, and family.
